Written to draw attention to the new mysticism that has crept into the church in many corners, where there is an over emphasis on emotional content, often without content that engages the mind.
Schaeffer identifies the problem of anti-intellectualism in the church and the new "Super-Spirituality" that looks more like mysticism than Biblical Christianity at times. He prescribes a more balanced spirituality that places the mind in it's proper place in the life of the Christian.

From the 1973 printing: "Times change. The New Left rises and falls, the drug scene waxes and wanes, Eastern religions appear on city streets, the Jesus People emerge, the new pentecostalism sweeps through all layers of society. These are so of the currents of change. Is there a signpost that marks the new temperment in Christianity? Dr. Francis A. Schaeffer thinks there is. He calls it the new super-spirituality. In the present essay he explains it, tells how it came about and suggest a firm response."
